“I discovered the reggae in Jamaica, and at the same time, I saw that in Germany, the begening of culture reggae’s development . Today, it is well established. With time, borders grow blurred little by little. We don’t wonder anymore if it is reggae of Germany, Switzerland or Japan, but just if it is good reggae. Reggae isan international music”

Informations of rastafarian movement

The Rastafari movement, or Rasta, is a new religious movement[1] that accepts Haile Selassie I, the former Emperor of Ethiopia, as God incarnate, called Jah or Jah Rastafari. He is also seen as part of the Holy Trinity as the messiah promised in the Bible to return. The name Rastafari comes from Ras (literally “Head,” an Ethiopian title equivalent to Duke), and Tafari Makonnen, the pre-coronation name of Haile Selassie I

The movement emerged in Jamaica among working-class and peasant black people in the early 1930s,[arising from an interpretation of Biblical prophecy partly based on Selassie’s status as the only African monarch of a fully independent state, and his titles of King of Kings, Lord of Lords, and Conquering Lion of Judah. Other characteristics of Rastafari include the spiritual use of cannabis, and various Afrocentric social and political aspirations, such as the teachings of Jamaican publicist, organiser, and black separatist Marcus Garvey (also often regarded as a prophet), whose political and cultural vision helped inspire a new world view.

The Rastafari movement has spread throughout much of the world, largely through interest generated by reggae music—most notably, that of Jamaican singer/songwriter Bob Marley. By 2000, there were more than one million Rastafari faithful worldwide. About five to ten percent of Jamaicans identify themselves as Rastafari. Many Rastafarians follow an ital diet which essentially means living by the dietary Laws of Leviticus and Deuteronomy in the Old Testament.

Leonard Howell, who has been described as the “first Rasta,” formed a commune which grew as large as 5,000 people at a place called Pinnacle, at St. Catherine in Jamaica

Bob Marley

Bob Marley
Bob Marley was and is still the biggest king of reggae.

His true name is Robert “Bob” Nesta Marley. He was born in the small village of Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish (Jamaica) , the February 6, 1945, of a white Jamaican father and a black Jamaican mother. After his father’s death, he moved to Kingston’s Trenchtown with his mother.

He left school at the age of 14 and started as an apprentice at a local welder’s shop. In his free time, he and Livingston made music with Joe Higgs, a local singer and devout Rastafari who is regarded by many as Marley’s mentor.

In 1963, Bob Marley, Bunny Livingston and others formed a ska and rocksteady group, calling themselves “The Teenagers”. The group which became later “The Waliers”.

From there, he begins a fulgurating career made of great successes as “I Shot the Sheriff“, No Woman, No Cry“, “Three Little Birds“, “Exodus”, “Could You Be Loved, Jamming“, Redemption Song, and One Love.

In July 1977, Marley was found to have malignant melanoma but he refused amputation, because of the Rastafari belief that the body must be “whole”:

« Rasta no abide amputation. I don’t allow a man to be dismantled. »

He died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, Florida on the morning of May 11, 1981 at the age of 36.

On August 25, 1998 she launched her solo career by releasing the critically acclaimed album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, bringing the then-emerging neo-soul genre to a wider commercial platform. After a four year hiatus, she released the controversial MTV Unplugged No. 2.0; a live recording of completely original material (except for “So Much Things to Say” and “The Conquering Lion”). She has won eight Grammy Awards and is the mother of five children with Rohan Marley, the fourth son of reggae legend Bob Marley.

ORIGINS

Altough influenced both by tradicional African and Caribbean music, or Rhythms and blues, reggae has its roots in Jamaican musical styles such as mento, ska, and rock steady.By the mid-1960s a mellower version of ska, known as rock steady, became the more popular form. In contrast to ska, the sparse, slower rhythms of rock steady allowed the vocalist to play a greater role. This encouraged the formation of a number of Jamaican pop vocal groups. Rock steady also put more emphasis on the bass lines, and its song lyrics reflected a growing awareness of injustice. Soon rock steady was combined with traditional mento rhythms to produce reggae music. “Do the Reggay” (196 8) by Toots and the Maytals was one of the earliest appearances of the term in a song
